As European football gathered momentum last weekend, several Nigerian footballers made their mark across the continent.

From Spain to France and even the United States, goals and assists flowed for Nigerian footballers, with Chrisantus Uche stealing the spotlight.

Spain: Chrisantus Uche Hits the Ground Running

Newly capped Super Eagles midfielder Chrisantus Uche picked up from where he left off last season, firing Getafe to a 2-1 victory away at Celta Vigo.

The 22-year-old was involved in both goals for the Spanish outfit. First, he slipped in Adrian Liso for the opener in the 47th minute, before turning finisher himself in the 72nd minute to seal all three points.

Uche, who registered four goals and six assists last term, looks primed for another stellar season. His energy, composure, and ability to deliver in key moments once again underlined why he has quickly become a vital piece for club and country.

England: Forest Win Without Awoniyi’s Goals

At the City Ground, Nottingham Forest opened their Premier League campaign with a 3-1 win over Brentford. While Taiwo Awoniyi remained on the bench, his strike partner from last season, Chris Wood, and new signing Daniel Ndoye found the net.

Defender Ola Aina featured for the entire 90 minutes, showcasing his defensive stability. For Brentford, compatriot Frank Onyeka was introduced late in the second half but could not change the tide of the match.

France: Simon Debuts for Paris FC

Over in Ligue 1, Moses Simon played his first competitive match for Paris FC since leaving Nantes. The forward was lively for 72 minutes in their clash against Angers, recording two attempts at goal, but his side fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat.

Though he didn’t get on the scoresheet, Simon’s pace and direct play hinted at what Paris FC fans can expect this season. The Nigerian winger is no stranger to making decisive contributions, having tallied 37 goals and 42 assists during his six years with Nantes.

France: Gabriel Osho Anchors Auxerre

Another Nigerian influence came from the back, where Gabriel Osho played all 90 minutes as Auxerre edged Lorient 1-0. The 27-year-old was solid in defence, winning tackles and completing passes that helped secure a clean sheet.

Germany: Afeez Aremu Joins Big Win

In Germany, midfielder Afeez Aremu came on for 31 minutes in Kaiserslautern’s emphatic 7-0 DFB Pokal victory over RSV Eintracht. It was a confidence-boosting run-out for the 25-year-old, who endured an injury-plagued campaign last season.

USA: Oshoala Returns to Action

Across the Atlantic, Asisat Oshoala returned to club duty with Bay FC after helping Nigeria lift the 2024 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations. She entered as a second-half substitute in their NWSL clash with San Diego Wave. Despite her introduction, Bay FC fell 2-1 at home, though fans gave the six-time African Women’s Player of the Year a rousing reception.
