Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of Nigerian-born England youth international Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea in a deal reported to be worth up to £24 million.

Carney Chukwuemeka, 21, impressed during his six-month loan spell at Dortmund last season, convincing the Bundesliga giants to make the move permanent.

Chukwuemeka, who joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in 2022 for £20 million, made 32 appearances for the Blues before heading to Germany in January.

The deal is part of a busy transfer window for Chelsea, who are under significant financial pressure to balance their books. The West London club have already raised over £270m from player sales this summer, a figure that nearly offsets their £277m spending on new arrivals.

The urgency to sell players stems from UEFA’s strict financial rules. The governing body fined Chelsea £26.7m earlier this year for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations, while also warning the club that they must record a positive transfer balance this window to register new signings for the upcoming Champions League campaign.

Note that Chelsea’s wage-to-income ratio had soared above 80%, well beyond the recommended limit.

Meanwhile, Chelsea defender Aaron Anselmino has also agreed a move to Dortmund, joining on a season-long loan. The 19-year-old has already flown to Germany to finalize the deal.

Stamford Bridge could still see more movement before Monday’s transfer deadline. A host of senior players including Nicolas Jackson, Raheem Sterling, Christopher Nkunku, Ben Chilwell and academy graduate Tyrique George have all been linked with exits.

On the incoming side, Chelsea are reportedly keeping tabs on Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons.
